The Victoria Cross Trust (VCT) is pleased to announce that their educational offering to those visiting Lakeside Village Shopping Outlet premises is to be extended further. In addition to the charitable aim of cleaning the graves and memorials of Victoria Cross recipients the VCT also seek to educate the public in the stories behind those who have earned the VC, the Ups highest award for valour. The current artefacts and information at our premises have recently been enhanced with further displays built and dioramas depicting stories and history behind the VC and its recipients added.
For a small fee of £4, visitors can enhance their visit through meeting one of the military veterans to hear about their military backgrounds. During this they will have the opportunity to learn more about the VC and in particular the seven local recipients. Artefacts including original weapons (deactivated) used in various conflicts can be handled and further displays relating to the Women’s Land Army, a VC gallery and sculpture form part of the guided tour.
For those wishing to experience weapons handling and firing, a diorama of the Burmese jungle, where George Cairns earned his VC, has been created in which to undertake this immersive learning opportunity.
All of this is being added to in the very near future with access to bespoke Education page where included in the fee is access to information and educational offerings to help visitors develop further their knowledge of the VC and its associated history. Unique access will include:
- Detailed information from authors and researchers relating to the VC and its recipients
- Opportunities for those involved in personal development programmes to work with the VCT to gather evidence towards their awards
- Genealogists seeking advice of tracing their military family histories.
